Tips to resist the urge to speed

Speeding is an easy infraction to commit. You may think it is no big deal to go 10, 20 or even 30 miles per hour over the speed limit, especially if other drivers are doing it. However, it can come with a variety of legal, financial and personal repercussions.

It is important for your own well-being to resist the urge to speed. Take notice of these tips to stop speeding.

Remember it is expensive

Whether you drive 15 or 30 miles over the speed limit, the consequences are costly. The average speeding ticket in Hawaii costs a total of $271.64 when you factor in rising insurance premiums. But excessive speeding charges can be drastically more expensive. Penalties for excessive speeding can include fines between $500 and $1,000.

This is not to mention that repeat offenses may require you to get SR-22 drivers insurance. SR-22 insurance can cost thousands of dollars.

Consider the legal and administrative consequences

Speeding excessively can also leave you with various criminal and administrative penalties, including the following:

  • A misdemeanor charge on your criminal record
  • License suspension
  • Mandatory driving improvement course
  • Jail time
  • Community service

You may also end up with reckless driving charges, which can increase criminal penalties.

Think about the dangers

Not only is speeding unlawful and expensive, but it is also a potentially harmful behavior. It is vital to recognize that you may be putting your own safety on the line. If you get into a collision, you may become seriously hurt. This also applies to any passengers in your car. Additionally, keep other drivers, motorcyclists, bicyclists and pedestrians on your mind. If you cause injury to other people because you were speeding, you may end up with a harsher conviction.
